For the first time in 100 years, access to the Redfern-North Eveleigh Precinct will be unlocked under a strategic vision by TAHE to create a new global destination for jobs, housing and public spaces.

Partnering with Transport for NSW on the Redfern-North Eveleigh Masterplan, the historic railyard precinct which once served NSW’s locomotives will be re-imaged into a new technology, residential and entertainment hub.

The renewal plan is focused on respecting and celebrating the significance of our First Nation’s people to the Site, the preservation and enhancement of industrial heritage buildings while continuing to grow the creative and innovative heart of the broader Tech Central Innovation District.

The plans are part of TAHE’s strategic vision and planning for NSW to realise the potential of underutilised rail infrastructure.

By creating better connections to the surrounding urban areas, TAHE will enable more active public transport usage and create additional spaces to support a vibrant and thriving community.

The RNE precinct consists of the following sub-precincts:

  • The Paint Shop Sub-Precinct will be a key component in the innovation future of Sydney, with strong links to tell the historical story. With a future innovation district character and direct connection to Redfern Station, the Paint Shop Sub-Precinct will be a fusion of employment, housing, retail and hospitality, interspersed with a variety of both permanent and adaptable pop-up recreation uses.
  • The Clothing Store Sub-Precinct will have a residential character that is integrated with community uses to create a vibrant inner-city place designed for living. The adaptive re-use of the historic Clothing Store building and new public domain with future community uses will create a great place for people to visit and unwind.
  • The Carriageworks sub-precinct is the cultural heart of the precinct and key anchor that is the foundation and exemplar for vibrant adaptive reuse development.

As part of the overall precinct transformation, a new southern passenger concourse providing easy access to platforms 1 to 10 via new stairs and lifts at Redfern Station is being delivered to improve connections between the station and key destinations in the area including the Redfern North Eveleigh Precinct.

The Precinct is in a unique location in Sydney - centrally located close to Redfern Station, Macdonaldtown Station, the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney University, the University of Technology, Sydney, South Eveleigh and within the broader Tech Central - a NSW Government commitment to create the biggest innovation and technology hub in Australia.
